Marco Wyss is Associate Dean for Global in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Professor of International History and Security in the School of Global Affairs, and Co-Director of the Centre for War and Diplomacy at Â鶹¹ÙÍø. He is also a Research Fellow in the Department of Military History at the Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London.
Prior to joining Lancaster, he was Senior Lecturer at the University of Chichester and Senior Researcher at the Center for Security Studies, ETH Zurich. He has also held positions as Senior Humboldt Fellow at the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz, Senior Researcher at the University of Lausanne, and Research Fellow at the University of the Free State. In addition, he has held visiting professorships at Sciences Po Lille, Sciences Po Aix, and the French Military Academy at Saint-Cyr.
Marco holds an MA in History and Philosophy from the University of Neuch?tel and an MA in International History from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva. He earned his PhD in Politics and International Relations and in History from the Universities of Nottingham and Neuch?tel.
Research Overview
My research focuses predominantly on the international history of the Cold War. While the initial focus was on the role of neutrality and Britain in the East-West struggle, I am currently working on the Cold War in the so-called Third World, specifically in Sub-Saharan Africa and in relation to Britain's and France's postcolonial security roles in this region. Meanwhile, I have also carried out research on peacekeeping in Africa, and the transformation of European armed forces since the end of the Cold War. Prior to moving into and beyond the Cold War, I carried out research on volunteers in the Waffen-SS.

I have received funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, the Humboldt Foundation, and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

I would welcome enquiries on topics related to the Cold War generally, but I would be specifically interested in proposals related to the Cold War in Europe and/or Africa. Meanwhile, I am also open to enquiries in relation to the following themes: British Foreign, Security and Defence policy since 1945, peacekeeping, and the transformation of armed forces.
